Frequently Asked Questions from New Students
How much does it cost to get my private pilot’s license?
| Air Center 1 offers a package for $7,350 that will get you to your private pilot’s license. This is only a value if you fly at least twice a week. Flying this often allows you to remember what you learned in the prior lesson. This package includes everything that you will need to get your license including a headset, all the books, instructor, aircraft and fuel. The only things that the package does not include are the cost of a medical certificate, the written test and check ride. (You can expect to pay $540.00+/- for these items.)

How long does it take to get my private pilot’s license?
| The length of your training depends entirely on how much time you have to dedicate to the effort. If you fly twice per week, you should be complete inside of six months. That is an appropriate length because you experience all seasons and the associated weather. We have had several students that have completed their training in as little as three months. But, we also have students who enjoy the training and are comfortable taking up to a year or more to get licensed. Ask about our accelerated training programs for various ratings.

How old does a student have to be?
| There actually is no age limit for students. We have students that are as young as 11. However, you must be 16 years old to solo and 17 years old to be awarded your pilot’s license.

What do I need to do before I start flying lessons?
| Actually, nothing. You will fly an airplane on your first lesson. We recommend that you get your medical certificate as soon as you can after you start flying to be sure that there is nothing that would disqualify you.
|
Can I take a friend along with me during my lesson?
| Yes. However, we generally use the Cessna 152 airplanes for training because they are the most economical. They are a two seat airplane. We also use Cessna 172 airplanes for training, which are a little more expensive. If you don’t mind spending a little more, your friend (up to two depending on the weight) can fly with you and they will have quite an experience.

Do you train Veterans?
| Air Center 1 is an accredited FAA Part 141 school. That means that we can train veterans under the GI Bill and have the VA pay for part, if not all, of the secondary training. That is, the student is responsible for the cost of their private pilot’s license. The VA will then pay for all training beyond the private license, including instrument, commercial, certified flight instructor and airline transport pilot certificates, all of which we offer.

Do you have financial aid available?
| Air Center 1 does not offer financing directly, but we do work with two companies that will finance your flying. Pilot Finance will finance your entire pilot training through your CFII. We have the applications in our office. We also work with Kentucky Telco, a Credit Union that may offer “signature loans” for up to $5,000.
